A non-gendered or unisex snood style scarf with a circumference of 68cm and height of 26cm.

This colourway, of old gold interlaced through warm stone, conjures the peaceful feeling of long northern evenings and exploratory journeys into the hills, quietly revealing hidden treasures, both tangible and experiential.

The muted purple lining - the colour of welsh slate - in organic brushed cotton lends a little more structure so that the scarf may stand a little higher to keep out even the most determined drafts.

The soft merino wool offers all the warmth and resilience associated with traditional flannel, but with a finer, more comfortable feel against the skin. Like all wools, it regulates temperature naturally, making it equally suited to crisp autumn mornings, evenings by the fire, or year-round layering. This combining of our textile heritage with modern wearability has enabled us to craft a garment equally at home in the workshop, in the hills, or around town; a garment made to age beautifully and become part of your own story over time.

Welsh Flannel

‘Flannel’ is an anglicisation of the word ‘gwlanen’ meaning ‘woollen’ also referring to an item of clothing (usually a shirt or leggings) made from a particular quality of woollen cloth, or, the cloth itself.

Welsh flannel was originally a utilitarian cloth, becoming distinguished in the C16th through a developing export market. Woven from fine yarns in a plain or twill weave, it was used to make practical garments and blankets that could provide comfort against the cold and wet Welsh climate. During the 19th century, flannel production was industrialised across Wales and these fine checked and striped fabrics became recognised far beyond our borders.

Unable to compete with the economic changes in the C20th, and the declining demand for woollen fabrics, Wales has, in recent years, come very close to loosing the capacity to produce this heritage cloth for good, but with the recent (and ongoing) restoration of Elvet Woollen Mill, it has at last been possible to commission a run of our very own Carpenter & Cloth Welsh Flannel.
