The concept for this jacket came about because, as anyone who works with wood (or has a partner who does..!) can tell you, wood shavings love wool so much that they never want to let go. In other words, when working in a cold wood workshop, you really want to have some good woolly layers on, but end up being indistinguishable from the workshop floor.

Our lovely Irish linen, however, makes a fantastic outer cloth, so I decided that we ought to try putting the wool on the inside… and the Winter Dust Jacket was born.

Lined with a classic wool flannel, woven at Melin Teifi (now sadly closed as a commercial mill) the fibres comprise of British lambswool and deadstock camel down yarn. The sleeves are lined with smooth cotton/hemp cloth so that, whatever you are wearing underneath, your arms will slide in easily.

The buttons are hand made for us by a potter in Conwy Bay, N.Wales. The grey-blue glaze mingled with flecks of dusty brown is like the merging of two worlds - where high, dry summits scrape the summer sky and receding waves leave sea worn rocks sparkling in the evening light. They are fairly chunky for good resilience but not too heavy for the cloth. To wash, we recommend a cold soak in the bath or bucket then a cold rinse and spin in the washing machine - best to button up the shirt and turning it inside out first to protect the buttons from knocking against the washing machine drum.

Hanging loop at the back neck.
